Trained in Japan, Laura is a printmaker specialising in rural landscape, working in classical Japanese water based woodblock and reduction linocut.
She uses landscape as a way of exploring shape and colour, making observational sketches and photographs outdoors which she uses as a starting point for each design drawing to begin a print. She prefers to allow the colours and layers of the prints to develop as she works, responding to the work as it progresses rather than having a strict plan.
Japan has had a profound effect on her approach and focused her interests on seasonality and evoking a sense of space and peace for the viewer.
