Simon first threw a pot aged 9 under the guiding hands and watchful eye of Tessa Oates at Chipstead Craft Studios. Many years later, as a sideline to his successful work as a graphic designer, he produces one-off wheel-thrown ceramics at his home studio in Kent. Each item of pottery is entirely unique – made and illustrated by hand.
His current work fuses illustration and sgraffito to depict and celebrate the exciting (sometimes imaginary) life of his Black Labrador Retriever (the least demanding of supermodels) in permanent, everlasting form – so much easier to keep clean than the real thing.
"I continue to find the entire process of making ceramics both fascinating and frustrating – so different from making marks on paper. The challenge is to keep creating and attempting to master the elemental technical issues presented by clays, slips, glazes and fire."
