Ali Herbert Ceramics
Ali lives in Lyme Regis with her family and makes stoneware fired to 1280°C in a gas reduction kiln, built at her country workshop. Her work is focused on making pots for use and the forms have developed over the last few years into robust calm, simply styled pots. She has worked as a craftswoman for 30 years now and admires refinement and order which is slow to create. "That which has great care of making which expresses natural beauty this is what I look for in a well made pot."
The way that a pot feels in the hand is a large part of our enjoyment of ceramics. Glazes with a smooth texture and which merge the colour of lichen and moss and stone as interpretations of pattern of beach or sea, or robust mountain terrain. The power of the reduction firing, where the melt of natural materials become the final test has great effect on the colour and patina. After each firing she makes notes and looks for new ways to use and work with the glazes and refine the discipline of her ceramics knowledge and practice.
