After completing a BA Hons in Geography, Antonia pursued her interest in ceramics; training in potter's workshops and taking a Diploma in Studio Pottery. A year spent drawing in the Middle East, Pakistan and India influenced her subsequent work, making her consider low tech ways of firing sculpture.
Antonia works using fine white stoneware clays which are honed down to create strong abstract forms. Forms may be thrown and altered, hand modelled or coiled. All surfaces are burnished several times over before firing. After abisque firing they are smoke fired often up to four times over and finally each piece is then wax polished. The smoke fired finish: sometimes subtle grey clouding, at other times bold splashes and lines of black, produce a translucent and timeless sense.
"Many of the sculptures and pots reflect an assimilation of my felt sense of walking in nature. They are never intended as a literal interpretation of the weather or landscape, rather I hope they capture some of the experiences of being out in the elemental world. I aim to capture an essence or quality that is perceived implicitly"
