Gwen is fascinated by the imagery and the wonder of animals; her imagination fuelled by our relationship with them and their anthropomorphism in childhood stories and fables. The mixed media pieces evoke a sense of this nostalgia. Her new Cirque de Céramique collection is inspired by imagery from the vintage circus.
"My making process involves the technique of pinching, I make hollow forms which are manipulated and modified to make the creatures bodies, their limbs and heads are modelled by hand and then attached."
Although rooted in the figurative tradition Gwen aims for a simplicity of form and try to capture something of the spirit of each animal rather than making an exact representation. The contrast between the cool glazed clay and the soft, colourful cashmere introduces a playful edge to her creatures and makes them attractive to handle.
Gwen trained at Cardiff School of Art and now works full time from her studio on the edge of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall.
