Mary makes slip decorated earthenware ceramics based on traditional country pottery. The pots are thrown on the wheel and decorated with painted, glazed and Sgraffitto images drawn directly with a knife or paintbrush onto the pots.
Design ideas are taken from the urban landscape of allotments and back gardens which surround her studio. They are a celebration of weeds, insects, and the scruffy back yard spaces which are full of life. Without them life would be infinitely dull and sterile.
Mary has been making ceramics from her studio in Derby since 2009. She has a BA in craft from Derby University and an MA in Contemporary ceramics from Loughborough University.
