Robert Greenhalf

"The theme of this exhibition, Across the Water, provides me with the perfect excuse to show a small selection of the work that I have produced over the past three years for a project about bird migration, entitled "Flight Lines".
Many of the migrant birds that spend their summers in Britain and Northern Europe spend their winters in Sub-Saharan Africa in very different landscapes and climate and associating with exotic African species of birds and mammals. I was lucky enough to be chosen to spend two weeks in Senegal, West Africa in January 2014 along with three fellow members of the Society of Wildlife Artists. Our job was to kick-start the joint project with the British Trust for Ornithology, recording in sketches, paintings and words some of our summer migrants in their winter habitats. Inspired by many amazing sights, I created a number of woodcuts on returning home, whilst eagerly awaiting the return of the first spring migrants to our shores. A book featuring a selection of the work produced both in Senegal and in Britain is due to be published in August this year.
